Thai industrial confidence index rises further in July

The latest survey among local industrialists stated that their sentiment has improved continuously in the past month.

The Federation of Thai Industries reported today industrial confidence index has climbed to 76.9 in July compared with 73.6 in June.

The index has risen for the second consecutive month as the world oil price dropped.

However July is the 28th consecutive month that the index stayed below the 100-point mark which reflects weak sentiment.

In any case, FTI stated that July was the first month of 2008 that business environment appeared more favorable for operators as the baht weakened slightly the world economy still expanded and inflationary pressure for further interest rate increase has eased.

The survey also found the three-month sentiment improved from 77 in June to 82.9 in July also because of falling oil price and weakening baht.

FTI: July auto export volume rises 27.1% on-year to 71,232 units

Thai auto exports have risen healthily in July when compared with the same time of 2007 according to the Thai Industries Federation.

FTI said Thursday Thailand has exported a total of more than 71,200 units of automobiles in July. This is a 27.1% on year increase.

In terms of value, auto exports amounted 32.6 billion baht last month or 36.4% higher than the same time of 2007.

During the first 7months of this year, Thai auto exports expanded almost 26% from 2007 to some 457,100 units with total value increased 30% to 207 billion baht.

Meanwhile the month of July also saw a 13.4% rise in local auto production to nearly 121,700 units according to F-T-I.

Auto production from January to July totaled more than 841,100 units or a 19% on-year rise.

The Federation has forecast that in 2008, Thailand would produce around 1.43 million units of automobiles which is nearly 11% higher than last year.

Thai export growth hits record high of 43.9% in July

This country has just enjoyed a new record-high export growth in July although its balance of trade remains in a deficit after 7 months of 2008 passed.

The Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary, Siripol Yodmuangcharoen, reported today Thai exports totaled almost 17 billion U.S. dollars last month or nearly 44% more than the same month of 2007.

At the same time, imports amounted almost 18 billion dollars which is a 55% y-o-y increase.

This has resulted in July trade deficit of around 1 billion baht.

Meanwhile from January to July this year, total Thai export value was more than 104 billion dollars or 26% higher than the same period of 2007.

At the same time, import grew almost 37% on-year to 106.2 billion dollars.

As a result, Thailand recorded higher trade deficit of some 2 billion dollars at the end of July.

Finance assures BoT of its independence at work

The Finance Ministry today repeated its assurance that the Thai central bank is independent from the government intervention.

Deputy Finance Minister, Suchat Tadatamrongvej, affirmed again today the government would not intervene in the Bank of Thailand’s monetary policy implementation.

However he stated that the BoT works are to help Thailand achieve GDP growth rate of 6% in 2008 as planned.

Suchat said Thailand is now adhering with a concept which suggested “growth targeting is subject to stability”.

He added the Finance Minister has just met with the BoT governor, the National Economic and Social Development Board chief and representatives from the Bureau of the Budget and the Securities and Exchange Commission to assure that all offices could implement their own policies and use their tools independently while discussing the directions of every office’s works.

The deputy finance minister also insisted that there has not been any conflict between the Finance Ministry and the central bank as rumor suggested.


SET MONITOR:

Thai share prices ended lower led by heavy sell-out in big-cap stocks in line with losses on regional stock markets.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand composite index fell 13.5 points to 676.5 with moderate volume of almost 11 billion baht or about 318 million dollars.

Foreign investors were the biggest net seller of 987 million baht which is around 29 million dollars followed by local institutions of 180 million baht or some 5 million dollars.

Retail investors posted a net buy of more than a billion baht. That’s approximately 34.5 million dollars.

Thailand’s main stock market lost almost 2% as investors cashed in on big-cap energy, banking, technology and property shares.

Analysts added market players remained wary about the effects of the credit crunch in the U.S. and unclear political development in Thailand.

EGCO price slips on gloomy forecast of smaller net profit in 2008 due to baht strength

Electricity Generating Public saw its share price fall nearly 2% this morning after the company’s management earlier suggested that its net profit in 2008 would be smaller than that of last year due to stronger baht and a temporary shutdown of its plants for maintenance earlier and also later in the year.

In 2007, EGCO posted a net profit of 8.4 billion baht.

Analysts reckoned that the company’s operation would return to normal level and grow again only in 2010.

This evening EGCO price settled at 75 baht a share.

ETG expects 2008 sales of THB1.25-1.3 bil due to arrivals of new clients & cheaper oil

Mai-listed, Eternity Grand Logistics, expects this year’s total sales of 1.25 - 1.3 billion baht after it has welcomed 2 new clients while its operation is likely benefit from falling oil price.

The company would also carry on with its Private Place of 25 million capital increase shares while seeking a new ally from Japan in hopes of attracting more Japanese clients. 

At the closing bell, ETG share price added 0.5% at 244.09 baht.
