Finance to keep tax cuts in place unless world crude falls below US$100/barrel

The Finance Ministry promised to keep the recently-introduced tax cuts for diesel and gasohol unchanged until the world oil price falls below the 100-dollars-a-barrel level.

Finance Minister, Surapong Suebwonglee, said today that the government would need to see how the world oil price will move from now before it can decide whether it will cancel the tax cut on diesel and gasohol.

As one of the 6 new state economic stimulus measures, the government has cut excise taxes on both fuels by more than 2 baht a liter from July 25.

The tax cut is planned to remain in effect until the end of next January.

Surapong stated the tax subsidy would not be cancelled if the world oil price still trades above the 100-dollars-per-barrel level.

Light sweet crude for September delivery has been falling in recent sessions to almost 110 dollars per barrel.

In the latest session, it traded slightly higher to 115.2 dollars a barrel.

Meanwhile newly-appointed Deputy Finance Minister, Pichai Nariptapand, said that he has asked the Excise Department to quickly find new ways to collect more revenue as state coffers are highly likely to be hit hard by the government's 6 stimuli.

Pichai expects the government to miss out more than 30 billion baht in its revenue during the current and the next fiscal year.

Recruitment of GLO lotto rep sees lower-than-expected no. of applicants

The first day of the Government Lottery Office’s lotto rep recruitment sees lower-than-expected interest before actual online sales start next month.

The Government Lottery Office (GLO) on Monday began the recruitment of online lottery sales representatives in Bangkok.

Acting GLO director, Wanchai Surakul, said that only some 100,000 applicants have registered their names on the website for the three-day recruitment period the number that is far below its 300,000 target.

Wanchai said the lower-than-expected turnout could be due to the small commission fee of 3.5% the office has offered.

Some applicants also said the current rate is too low and they wished it would be increased to 10%.

The recruitment of lotto representatives in Bangkok would end on August 22 before the process takes place across the country.

The new online lottery sales are scheduled to commence on September 17 with the first draw planned on October 1.

Sluggish business conditions lead to mass cancellation of credit card-loan A/C’s

Local banks and financial institutions have promptly cancelled a number of credit card and personal loan accounts during the past months to safeguard themselves from threats of NPLs.

National Credit Bureau Company CEO, Niwat Kanjanaphoomin, said today under current economic sluggishness, local financial institutions and banks have closed quite a number of personal loan and credit card accounts.

Niwat said this is because all institutions have long applied a policy that demands immediate termination of any account that has outstanding debts of more than 3 months in order to prevent them from suffering problems of large non-performing loans.

He added all banks and financial institutions have also been stricter in granting loans.

According to National Credit Bureau, around one million credit record inquiries have been made to NCB each month during H1-08.

At the same time, total outstanding credit card debts have risen almost 6% while credit-card NPL’s soared nearly 40% to around 5.5 million baht.

SET MONITOR:

Thai shares fell on the first trading day of the week on political uncertainty.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand composite index lost more than 10 points to 697.2 with moderate volume of some 10 billion baht or about 303.5 million dollars.

Retail investors were the biggest net buyer of 240 million baht which is around some 7 million dollars followed by foreign investors of nearly 40 million baht.

Local institutions took turn to be a net seller of 280 million baht or some 8 million dollars.

Thai stock market closed around 1.50% lower amid concern over domestic political uncertainty.

The market fell mainly on the back of losses in banking and property shares while investors took a wait-and-see stance until the future of the embattled Thai government becomes clearer.

MINT confident 2008 earnings to grow 15-20% as planned; expect 5-yr profit growth target of 20%

Minor International is confident that it will be able to post the annual earnings growth of 15 – 20% this year as planned mainly due to promising tourism business outlook.

It also set aside a total investment budget of 17 billion baht for the next 5 years to expand its hotels and restaurants.

The company is now hopeful it will enjoy an annual profit growth of 20% from 2009 - 2013.

However this evening, MINT share closed almost 1.5% lower at 14 baht apiece.

THL plans to delete accumulated losses by end of 2008

Tongkah Harbour Public expects to erase all its accumulated losses of some 100 million baht by the end of this year by utilizing the company’s consolidated operating profits.

It said in Q2-08 alone, the company has already registered a net profit of almost 30 million baht.

Tongkah is also adamant to delivery a total of 2 thousand ounces of gold per month to Deutsche Bank from March 2008 to February 2009 as agreed.

But at the closing bell, THL lost more than 4% still and closed at 1.63 baht.
