New Commerce Minister wants 2008 CPI at 6% & 15%+ export growth

Newly-appointed Commerce Minister Chaiya Sasomsup is ambitious to control Thailand’s inflation within 6% and drive export to grow more than 15% this year.

New Commerce Minister Chaiya Sasomsup said today he would push for this year’s export growth rate to higher than 15%.

The Commerce Ministry has set an export growth target of 12.5% for 2008.

He also predicted that with the world oil price likely to fall to below the 100-dollars-a-barrel level by the end of this year Thai inflation could fall to 6% as well.

Local inflation hit its newest 10-year high of 9.2% in July.

The new Commerce Minister added he would soon invite local manufacturers to a meeting to discuss current cost structures after they have pleaded with the ministry to raise some retail prices.

The meeting is expected to also determine if prices of certain products should be adjusted downward to go in line with recent drops in the world oil price.

Chaiya also stated that the ministry would ask producers not to raise prices of necessity items to help consumers cope with present inflationary pressure.

New Deputy Fin Min confident 6 stimuli to add 0.8% to 2008 GDP

The new Deputy Finance Minister is confident that the recently-introduced stimulus measures would add almost a per cent… to local GDP growth in 2008.

Newly-appointed Deputy Finance Minister, Suchart Thadathamrongvej, and Pichai Naripthapha started their new jobs at the Finance Ministry this morning.

Suchart told reporters he believes the 6 economic stimulus measures which will be valid for 6 months starting from August 1st, would inject as much as 80 billion baht into the local economy.

The expected amount is equivalent to 0.8% of Thai GDP.

He also plans to put more focus on the monetary, fiscal and energy policies to help restore confidence and accelerate investment.

Accordingly, Suchart expects Thai GDP growth rate of 4-5% this year.

However he admitted that if the current political instability is not resolved in time, this year's economic growth rate could be only 3-4%.

Mingkwan pledges to quickly restore foreign investor confidence

Investor confidence restoration is now the priority of the Industry Ministry.

New Industry Minister, Mingkwan Sangsuwan, said today that his top agenda at the ministry is to promptly bring back foreign investor confidence.

Mingkwan plans to discuss with the Board of Investment all state promotional endeavors in the past months and their results.

He will also continue his predecessor’s “the Year of Investment” project to draw more overseas capital into the country after many foreign investors have reportedly been attracted to invest in Thailand’s neighbors lately.

Mingkwan succeeded Suwit Khunkitti who abruptly announced his departure from the coalition government last week.

The new Industry Minister added the upgrade of Thailand’s competitiveness is another project he is looking at.

He will also liaise with other related ministries and state agencies to determine the direction of the government’s energy policy which is highly anticipated by all automakers.

One-Two-Go in hot seat with employee protest against lay-off

The problem is far from over for low-cost airline, One-Two-Go as its employees started a protest against the company’s plan to downsize its workforce.

More than 100 One-Two-Go employees have demanded a negotiation with the company’s management after they heard of the plan to cut down its workforce.

One-Two-Go Airlines announced last month the suspension of its service from July 22nd to September 15th due to mounting cost pressures spurred by surging oil prices, fierce competition from rival airlines, falling domestic passenger demands and a poor business outlook.

However Civil Aviation Department chief, Chaisak Angsuwan, said then that the airline decided to suspend its operation because its airplanes did not meet the required security standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Protesting staffs claimed that more than 200 employees have been hit hard by the suspension of service and only received half of their monthly salary in July.

Meanwhile reporters said One-Two-Go's founder and chairman, Udom Tantiprasongchai, has assured the airline’s management that the company would take full responsibility in the termination of employment of all affected employees.

SET MONITOR:

Thai share prices finished higher on the back of active buying into bank, property and energy stocks.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand’s main index rose more than 9 points to 676 points with active volume of some 16 billion baht or about 495 million dollars.

The only net seller on the local market was retail investors of 808 million baht which is around 24 million dollars.

The biggest net buyer of today was local institutions of 578 million baht or some 17 million dollars followed by foreign investors of 304 million baht that’s approximately 9 million dollars.

The SET index gained more than 1% after investors actively scooped up banking, transport, property, energy and tech stocks.

Analyst said today’s rise on the local bourse also followed previous fall in the world oil price.

SET SPOTLIGHT:

SPALI nears 2-mth high after reporting 160% on-year profit growth in Q2-08 report

Share prices of developer, Supalai, rose more than 4% to near its two-month high of 3.12 baht apiece after the company reported a healthy on-year net profit growth of 160%.

Supalai’s Q2-08 net profit amounted 476 million baht compared with 183.5 million baht from the same time of last year due to the government’s property stimulus measures.

The company also announced that its Board of Directors has approved an interim dividend payment of 15 satang a share on August 28th.

This evening Supalai closed 4% higher at 3.12 baht.

BECL enjoys gains following reports of likely expressway toll fee rise in September

Bangkok Expressway Public has enjoyed almost 2% gains earlier today after it was reported that the Transport Ministry would approve the requested expressway toll fee increase on September 1st.

The fee rise which was earlier approved by Expressway Authority of Thailand will lead the expressway toll to go up from 40 baht to 45 baht for each passenger car and an increase of 10 - 15 baht for trucks.

BECL price settled at its day’s high of 17.20 baht this evening.
